Apple has introduced tvOS 26, the forthcoming major software update for Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD, which integrates an enhanced AirPlay speaker feature, allowing users to designate any AirPlay speaker as a permanent audio output.
This update expands upon previous functionality. Prior to tvOS 26, the Apple TV 4K allowed only HomePod and HomePod mini speakers to be set as permanent audio outputs. All other AirPlay speakers could only establish temporary connections, which required manual reconnection for each use. This meant that the wireless connection to non-HomePod AirPlay speakers would frequently disconnect between uses, necessitating repeated setup if a user wished to employ them as a default audio source.
New Apple TV: Faster, smarter and maybe cheaper
With tvOS 26, this limitation has been removed. Users can now navigate to the Settings app on their Apple TV and select any AirPlay speaker to serve as the permanent audio output. The Apple TV system will retain this setting indefinitely, eliminating the need for repeated manual connections. This change enables a broader range of wireless speakers to be integrated into a stable home theater setup with the Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD. The update joins other features in tvOS 26, including a Liquid Glass design, new screensavers, and FaceTime upgrades.
