Google has confirmed that all remaining links created with its legacy URL shortening service, goo.gl, will be permanently deactivated next month. As of August 25th, 2025, any link in the https://goo.gl/* format will cease to function and will instead return a 404 error page.
The company officially closed the goo.gl service to new users back in 2019, but allowed existing links to continue working. However, in a July 2024 blog post, Google announced its plan for the final deprecation, citing a steep decline in usage. At the time, the company noted that “more than 99% of them had no activity in the last month.”
For the past year, users clicking on these shortened URLs have been met with a warning page indicating the link’s impending removal.
With the deadline now just one month away, website administrators and content creators are advised to audit their sites and documents for any remaining goo.gl
