Pixel 10 Is Getting A MagSafe-like Feature But There’s A Catch

Google’s upcoming Pixel 10 smartphones, including the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold, are anticipated to exhibit increased weight and thickness compared to their predecessors, with the exception of the Pro XL model. This design alteration is reportedly linked to the integration of magnets, intended to support the new Qi2 wireless charging standard set by the Wireless Power Consortium.

Reports from Android Headlines indicate that the Pixel 10 series may be approximately 1 to 11 grams heavier and approximately 1 mm thicker. This change signifies a departure from the industry trend towards lighter and thinner devices. The primary rationale for this increase in dimensions is the rumored inclusion of internal magnets within the devices. These magnets are crucial for enabling efficient wireless charging through the Qi2.2 standard, which utilizes magnetic alignment to minimize power loss during the charging process.

The Wireless Power Consortium recently introduced new specifications for Qi2.2 wireless charging technology. This updated standard incorporates magnetic alignment, a feature designed to enhance charging efficiency by ensuring precise placement between the device and the charging pad. Apple has utilized a similar approach with its MagSafe technology, which has been integrated into iPhones since the iPhone 12, featuring a ring of magnets around the wireless charging coil. The potential adoption of built-in magnets in the Pixel 10 series suggests a broader industry shift towards this magnetic alignment solution for wireless charging in Android devices.


Google leaks its own Pixel 10 lineup


The introduction of the Qi2 standard also facilitates faster wireless charging capabilities, allowing for up to 25W of power delivery. The initial Qi2 wireless chargers were announced earlier this month, with companies such as Belkin and Ugreen preparing to release products that support this new standard in the coming months. If the Pixel 10 series incorporates these built-in magnets, it is anticipated that other smartphone manufacturers will follow this trend to ensure compatibility with the evolving wireless charging ecosystem.

Alternatively, Google could opt to implement magnetic capabilities through accessory cases rather than directly integrating them into the phones. There have been reports, including from 9to5Google, speculating about a “Pixelsnap” series of charging accessories. These accessories would function similarly to Apple’s MagSafe products, providing magnetic alignment without requiring magnets to be built directly into the phone’s chassis. The official details regarding the Pixel 10 series, including its design and charging capabilities, are expected to be unveiled at the Made by Google event scheduled for August 20.
