Google Docs Brings Gemini Image Creation To Android

Google Docs is expanding its Gemini-powered image generation feature to Android devices, following its initial desktop implementation, with availability contingent on specific AI subscription plans.

Google initiated its AI-powered image generation efforts in Docs over a year ago, initially providing a tool specifically for generating cover images. This functionality evolved last fall when Google Docs integrated Gemini and Imagen for more general-purpose image creation, enabling users to insert various pictures into their documents. Prior to this recent expansion, this image generation capability was exclusively available as a desktop solution.

Nine months after its desktop debut, Google announced the mobile expansion of this tool. The rollout of the feature on Android commenced last Friday, with full availability expected for all eligible users within a two-week timeframe. Access to this image generation functionality within Google Docs is restricted to specific user tiers. Users require an AI Pro, AI Ultra, or a supported Business or Education plan to utilize the feature.

For individuals who purchased a Pixel 9 device, AI Pro access may already be included. Google also indicated plans for an additional complimentary AI Pro offer linked to the upcoming Pixel 10 release.
