Instagram Tests Picks Feature To Match User Interests

Instagram is developing “Picks,” an internal prototype feature designed to help users identify shared interests among their connections. Reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi initially discovered this unreleased functionality.

According to screenshots provided by Paluzzi, the “Picks” feature allows individuals to select preferred movies, books, television programs, games, and music. Instagram then identifies instances where these selections overlap with those made by their friends. While Instagram has not provided specific details regarding “Picks,” the company likely intends this feature to facilitate more personal connections and generate conversations centered on mutual interests among users.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, previously outlined the platform’s strategic focus for 2025, emphasizing creativity and connection. In a January Instagram post, Mosseri stated, “To help people connect with friends over the things they discover on Instagram, we’re going to double down on messaging, make consuming content more interactive and social, and explore new ways to connect with friends.” This statement indicates a broader initiative to enhance user interaction and foster engagement through shared experiences.

The introduction of “Picks” may not be universally welcomed, as some users express concerns about additional features contributing to an already dense application interface. Instagram has previously encountered user dissatisfaction following the release of features such as Instagram Map, which many users indicated they did not desire. The eventual release date or even the official rollout of “Picks” remains uncertain, consistent with other features currently in internal development.
